What is New Media?

New media, also called “emerging media” and at times “digital media” simply consists of new media formats that can be used in marketing; many of which are digital, hence the use of the word “digital” at times.  They are called “new” in relation to traditional media such as TV, radio, and print advertising that have been around for decades.  New media formats include social networks such as Facebook and Twitter; social media sites such as Pinterest and YouTube; websites; apps; widgets; podcasts; RSS feeds; banner ads; blogs; in-game advertisements, video ads, Bluetooth marketing and any other format newer than traditional media.

The following video depicts how mainstream some new media formats have become.  Many new media formats make a big impact on how we as consumers experience and communicate with companies and their brands.
